Newsstand Roundup: October 2005

Filed under: Newsstand RoundupManda @ 2:22 am

We would just like to point out we’re not necessarily endorsing buying any of these. We’re just telling you what’s in ‘em so should you wish to, you can buy them. Or sit in the bookshop and read them there.

Another Magazine: Patrick Wolf. Did we mention before that we kind of love him? [Kim: What do you mean, ‘kind of’?]

Anthem: Sufjan Stevens, CocoRosie, The Duke Spirit, Brian Eno

Artrocker: 1st anniversary issue out October 17th, Be Your Own Pet out October 31st. [Manda: Most overrated band of the year. Not to mention not all that impressive live. Just saying.]

Blender: The 500 Greatest Songs since you were born. As the list has been posted in its entirety here, there’s probably nothing either of us could say that the ONTD’ers haven’t already. There’s also Franz Ferdinand. [Manda: In the magazine, I mean, not on ONTD. Although if you look hard enough, you might be able to find some Franz on ONTD, I couldn’t really say.]

Dazed and Confused: More Franz, yet another story on Houston hip hop [Manda: ARGH!], Boards of Canada, The Research, Wolf Parade

Disorder: The Magic Numbers, Reading/Leeds special, girls in rock

Fader: Looks like another hip hop only issue this time around.

Magnet: New Pornographers, Sufjan Stevens, Guided By Voices: A History, Nada Surf. [Manda: You know, I remember once the local music channel had this long GBV retrospective on in the middle of the night, and I thought it would never end… considering it was mindnumbingly dull and yet in no way helped my insomnia I find the thought of this magazine piece a little scary.]

Mojo: Mojo rebels! The Ramones, 50 greatest US punk tracks (so much for idiots who say there’s no such thing as American punk, ay?). Also Depeche Mode [Kim: who have re-recorded the same album they’ve been doing for about twenty years now yet again. You’d think they’d stop beating the deceased equine.] and a return to safe territory with Clapton and the Stones.

Nylon: Leslie Feist, who is part of the Broken Social Scene collective, in case you didn’t know. [Manda: I’ve got a couple of photos of her somewhere around here from when I saw her open for British Sea Power a while back… I might get those up into the gallery sometime if anyone wants to see them.]

Paste: My Morning Jacket, Sigur Rós, the return of Big Star

Plan B: Interviews with Franz Ferdinand, Devendra Banhart, Sufjan Stevens, and Vashti Bunyan. [Kim: God, I have such a love/hate relationship with that magazine… they cover bands I love, but in such an irritatingly self-consciously ‘weird’ way it drives me insane.] Also an article on the exploitation of women in ‘crunk’ music.

Q: John Lennon, Stereophonics, James Blunt, 25 Most Pathetic Rock Stars, The Bravery, Madness. [Manda: I’m wondering if the fact that the 25 most pathetic rock stars bridges the gap between James Blunt and the Bravery means something… Kim: 25 most pathetic rock stars could describe the contents of most of their issues.]

Rockpile: Franz Ferdinand [Kim: Could Franz be in any more magazines? For a band whose second album is disappointing, they’re getting far too much press, dammit.]

Rolling Stone: Paul McCartney [Kim: Oh good, yet another article on The Boring Beatle. Just what we need.]

Spin: 20th anniversary issue, featuring a look back at the past 20 years in music. Fairly self-evident, right?

Urb: Amidst all the usual DJ stuff, there’s a feature on Gogol Bordello, whose stage shows are just weird enough to be a tad intriguing.

Vice: The Young Knives and Be Your Own Pet

The Wire: Boards of Canada

Word: Mick Jones, John Peel memorial
